STAMFORD — Coming off a remarkable upset victory at fourth-seeded Crosby of Waterbury in the first round of the Class LL state tournament, the No. 29 seed Newtown High School’s boys’ basketball team couldn’t overcome No. 13 Westhill in the second round. The host Vikings ended Newtown’s campaign with a 56-34 win on its home court on March 6.
Westhill’s defensive pressure and quickness was simply too much for the Nighthawks. Newtown limited the damage in the opening half and hung within striking distance, down 23-14 at the break. Trailing 28-16, the Hawks went on a 5-0 run early in the third quarter to get to within seven.
Mike Daubert scored a basket, was fouled, and drained his free throw for a 3-point play, and Connor Quinn drove to the hoop and handed off to Julian Dunn for two points to make things interesting with 5:38 to go in the third.
Westhill, however, reeled off 12 straight points during the next two and a half minutes to seize control, and never looked back.
Yveson Cassamajor led the Vikings with 18 points. Newtown got nine from Quinn, eight from Daubert, and six from Dunn. Gavin Scallon scored four, Sean Elliott hit shot from downtown for his three points, and Jake Ball added two.
